To all hikers on the Shin-etsu Trail, this is an important notice regarding Asiatic black bears. To ensure that hikers and wildlife can safely coexist and enjoy the trail, please carefully read the following information before entering the mountains.

(English follows.)

The entire Shin-etsu Trail is a natural habitat for Asiatic black bears. While there have been no reports of bear-related accidents or injuries on the trail to date, sightings and bear signs (tracks, scat, etc.) are reported every year. Please hike with the awareness that “you could encounter a bear at any time” and take appropriate precautions.
The official websites of Nagano and Niigata Prefectures provide the latest information on bear sightings, as well as detailed guides on the proper mindset and appropriate actions to take when entering the mountains. Please be sure to check these resources during your planning stage and before departing.
▶ Nagano Prefecture Website: “What you need to know about Asiatic black bears”
▶ Niigata Prefecture Website: “Preventing injuries from Asiatic black bears”
Asiatic black bears are naturally cautious and will generally try to run away or hide when they sense a human presence. The most important precaution is to avoid surprising them.
Walk while making noise by using a bear bell or trekking poles. Solo hikers, in particular, should take extra care to occasionally clap their hands or call out to alert bears of their presence.
The risk of an encounter increases when visibility is poor (early morning, dusk, heavy fog) or when it is difficult for you and the bear to hear each other (strong winds, heavy rain, or walking along streams). We strongly advise avoiding hiking during bad weather or poor visibility.
Asiatic black bears have an extremely keen sense of smell and are said to be able to detect odors from several kilometers away, or even tens of kilometers away under the right conditions. Therefore, food, trash and even cosmetics carried by hikers can attract bears.
When hiking, please strictly follow the guidelines below.
■ Place any items that may emit odors in sealable bags (such as freezer bags) or containers for transport and storage, and do not leave them unattended outdoors.
◆ Food
◆ Trash
◆ Cutlery and tableware
◆ Toothpaste
◆ Cosmetics (lip balm, etc.)
■ Do not leave food scraps or cooking liquids on the trail, at the tentsite, or in the surrounding area.
■ Avoid wearing clothing washed with strongly scented fabric softeners.

Bears that become accustomed to the taste of human food learn that ‘where there are people = where food is available’, which causes their natural wariness of humans to diminish. As a result, they are classified as ‘dangerous bears’ and may ultimately be culled.
Each hiker’s efforts help prevent tragic accidents involving both humans and bears.
▶ The 7 Principles of Leave No Trace; #3 Dispose of Waste Properly
We highly recommend carrying bear spray in case of an unexpected encounter. Bear spray can be purchased at outdoor shops nationwide, or rented at the following facilities near the Shin-etsu Trail:
▶ Shin-etsu Shizenkyo Activity Center (inside Iiyama Station)
▶ mont-bell Iiyama Store
*Please check their respective websites for details, and contact the stores directly if you have any questions.
If a critical situation occurs, such as coming into physical contact with a bear and sustaining injuries, please stay calm and follow these steps:
If a bear attack is unavoidable, take a defensive position to protect your vital organs (head, neck, and abdomen). Lie face down on the ground and cover the back of your neck with both hands. Once the bear has left, quickly move to a safe location.
If you are injured, immediately call the police (110) or the fire department/ambulance (119) to request a rescue. Please provide your current location as accurately as possible (place name, section number, nearby signpost numbers, or landmarks).
Use your personal first aid kit to stop any bleeding and apply initial treatment while waiting for rescue. If you have secured your safety and are able to make a call, please also notify the Shin-etsu Trail Club office.
Currently, there have been multiple bear sightings reported in the following areas. If you are passing through, please be extremely careful.
◆ Section 3 (Sobu no ike Pond – Mt. Kuroiwa area)
◆ Section 8 (Miyanohara – Ketto area)
